THE HYPE OF UBER: A SAN FRANCISCO BASED RIDE SHARING STARTUP
Any press is good press, right? Uber, a San Francisco based ride sharing service, continues to receive press recognition by a multitude of medias worldwide.
You may ask yourself, “What is all the hype about?” Uber markets themselves as an innovative ride sharing solution offering clear cashless pricing as well as the ability to split your fare with others, choose your type of car, and share your feedback all through your mobile phone.
This past June, I was traveling in Atlanta, Georgia and decided to get a taxi for dinner. Twenty minutes after we left, a separate group of colleagues arranged for Uber to bring them to the same destination. Who arrived first? The group who took Uber. Our taxi driver claimed he knew where the restaurant was and proceeded to take us the opposite direction. From that day on, we took Uber.
With an innovative approach, Uber tapped into what people really enjoy- the experience. With Uber, you can track your driver on the map and you are provided the driver’s name, contact information, and car details. Uber drivers are freelance drivers offering them the ability to use their personal car to provide rides while earning income.
Negative press surrounds Uber because they continue to upset local taxis dues to their low fares and the overall belief that they are unfairly competing by hiring freelance drivers who do not pay for a taxi medallion.
