NOLA Brewing Gets A Boost from Pitt, McConaughey & Brees

Sometimes in marketing, it’s better to be lucky than good. You never know when a great opportunity will descend from the heavens, like a beer flying on Bourbon Street.

On a recent Saturday in the New Orleans historic French Quarter, a local brand got a big boost from some major celebrities.

Matthew McConaughey and his family were in town for a charity event. He was on a French Quarter balcony with his family and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees when Brad Pitt emerged on the balcony across the street. Pitt chatted up the "True Detective" star, then went inside, grabbed a can of beer — NOLA Hopitoulas, to be exact – and threw it across the street to McConaughey, who was photographed drinking it.

Tyler Durden to Rust Cohle! That’s pretty cool. And it’s great exposure for NOLA Brewing, the local brewery which makes “Hopitoulas.” As you can imagine, the story went viral. See stories here, here, here and here. Shoot, the bro-toss even made it onto the Today Show!

"Everyone on Facebook and Twitter has been excited that the idea of grabbing a craft beer instead of traditional American lager has finally trickled up to the Hollywood A-listers,” NOLA Brewing’s CEO Kirk Coco told Today.com. “It says something about how craft beer is starting to become the norm. I think it will become more and more commonplace to see celebrities drinking craft beers.”

And in the social media age, these types of “right place, right time,” rags-to-riches marketing stories could become the more commonplace, as well.

Fun Fact ... Origins of Factoring

The roots of factoring, at least in the sense of merchants who purchased trade receivables, at a discount, start in Early Mesopotamia.

Local merchants hired commission agents to travel to far away cities, to buy goods, and bring them back, for resale by the merchant.

Merchants made cash advances to the agent, who gave the merchant a negotiable promissory note. The note might be payable to the individual merchant, or to a “tamkarum,” a guild of merchant-bankers who specialized in trade.

The merchant could borrow against the agent’s note from the tamkarum, or sell it to the tamkarum. If the note was sold, always at a discount, the right to the ordered goods passed with it, to the tamkarum.

Cousins Products Gets a Hand From Gulf Coast

The photograph of Cousins salad dressings seen to the left almost wasn't taken. Back in 2008, Cousins Products had a fire in their leased facility. Though the blaze was small, the fire department condemned the building for three weeks, delaying production and distribution. Unable to produce, they fell behind on orders and lost profits. As luck would have it, a Gulf Coast employee happened upon Allison Cousins at a promotional event, and she was a fan of the tasty salad dressing! Ms. Cousins mentioned the mishap at the production site, and GCBC came to the rescue by providing a factoring line of credit, creating immediate cash flow and saving the company from closing its doors.

"I love my bank, Gulf Coast Bank & Trust, and they love me!

Sincerely,

Allison Cousins"
